BURSARY SCHEME

The Book Marketer believes that all writers should access marketing advice and training to improve their career opportunities. We offer funded places to low-income authors via our two-hour book marketing training and coaching sessions. We currently provide one funded place per month to a low waged author from the U.K. or U.S.A.

Who qualifies for our book marketing scheme?

At present, our scheme is open to residents in the UK and USA. Our criteria for application to the scheme are:

  • You are 18 or above.
  • You are a first-time author.
  • You wish to make a career as an author.
  • You have completed your manuscript, and it has been edited and proofread to a professional standard.
  • You cannot afford our fees because you are living on a low wage. (We define a low yearly wage as UK £19,000/USA $18,000 before tax).

What if you do not qualify?

Further grant information can be found on the following websites:

  • Funds For Writers has lots of helpful information on grants for writers.
  • Jericho Writers have a bursary for authors who want to self-edit their work.
  • The Society of Authors offers grants for process works.
  • The Royal Literary Fund assists writers in need with grants and pensions.
  • Write Life has a good article on grant opportunities for writers, plus tips for applying.
  • Kickstarter fundraising is becoming an increasingly effective means of raising money for writers. Getting your novel featured on a big podcast can effectively get publicity for your fundraiser campaign.

What do we expect from you?

  • A 1000 word article for our blog on your genre. It's tropes, themes, characters and what inspired you to write in it.
  • A determination to put the principles we teach you into practice and report back to us in six months on your progress.

Terms & Conditions

Bursaries are presented based on financial need. Applicants must live permanently in the United Kingdom or the United States to qualify for a bursary. The bursary covers the entire cost of our two-hour book marketing training and consultation, plus a follow-up call. Any other service will not be covered. We limit grants to one per person per month. The bursary recipients must write a 1000-word blog post about their genre as a condition of the award. This will mention its tropes, themes, characters, and what inspired you to write in it. You must submit it to us before the consultation.

Applicants will receive a confirmation of receipt for their application, but if you do not hear from us, please consider your application unsuccessful. All decisions regarding bursaries are final, and no correspondence about them will be entered into. If the conditions of the award are not met, it may be withdrawn at any time, in whole or in part.

If a grant recipient must cancel a booking, the bursary award will be withdrawn, but a new application can be submitted later.

A Book Marketer bursary cannot be exchanged or transferred for any cash equivalent. We will not consider applications from previous Book Marketer bursary recipients who failed to attend a course without notice or good reason.
